Discoidal artifacts (also called discoidals, chunkey stones, or chunky stones) from the Midwestern United States are primarily ground stone objects linked to the Mississippian culture (roughly 800–1600 CE) and late Woodland periods. They are most associated with the game of chunkey (or chungke/chenco), in which a stone disc was rolled across a prepared field or court, and players threw spears, darts, or arrows as close as possible to where it stopped. Historical accounts from Southeastern and some Plains tribes describe the game, and these stones were often highly valued, sometimes passed down or used in ceremonial contexts.
