Shalako figures are among the most iconic and important in Zuni Pueblo (New Mexico) ceremonial life. They are giant, bird-like messengers of the rain gods, standing about 10 feet tall in live performances. They appear during the annual Shalako ceremony (typically late November or early December), a major all-night sacred drama that blesses new homes, gives thanks for the harvest, and prays for rain and prosperity in the coming year.
