Mata Ortiz pottery is a modern revival (beginning in the mid-to-late 20th century) inspired by ancient Casas Grandes/Paquimé (Mogollon) ceramics from the nearby archaeological site. Juan Quezada Celado is widely credited with rediscovering and refining the techniques using local clays; the style then spread through families and the village, becoming a major economic and artistic force. Pieces are typically thin-walled, low-fired, hand-built (no potter’s wheel), burnished, and painted freehand with mineral pigments in geometric, animal, or abstract designs. Styles range from black-on-white or polychrome to blackware (sometimes with graphite).
