Rose Williams is one of the best-known Navajo potters who revived and popularized traditional pitch pottery in the mid-to-late 20th century. Her daughter, Alice Cling, is also a prominent potter in this style. Pieces by Rose Williams are frequently signed "RW" on the bottom. Common characteristics are Simple, elegant shapes (jars, bowls, or water vessels), High polish on the clay body, Piñon pitch interior and/or exterior for a shiny, sealed finish, Subtle decorations like a braided or incised band near the rim, Fire clouds from outdoor firing and Sizes often range from small (6") to larger jars (8"+).
