Michelle Williams is a renowned Navajo (Diné) potter from Shonto, Arizona, on the Navajo Reservation. She comes from a prominent family of potters: her grandmother, Rose Williams, is considered the matriarch of modern Navajo pottery, and her mother, Alice Cling, is a highly acclaimed artist who helped revive and popularize contemporary Navajo pottery styles.
Michelle learned traditional techniques from her grandmother and mother and has been creating pottery since the early 1990s. Her work follows classic Navajo methods. Hand-coiled from locally dug clay, Mixed with temper (such as basalt), Outdoor wood-fired (often producing distinctive "fire clouds"—random gray/black markings from the firing process)and Coated with piñon pine pitch for a glossy, lustrous sheen and waterproofing.
