Sue Williams (also known as Sue Ann Williams) is a respected Navajo (Diné) potter from the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona, often associated with areas like Shonto, Cow Springs, or Tonalea.
She comes from a renowned family of potters: her mother, Rose Williams, is widely regarded as the matriarch of contemporary Navajo pottery. Sue learned the craft from her mother, alongside her sisters Alice Cling and Susie Williams Crank, who are also highly acclaimed artists in the field.
Navajo pottery, including Williams' pieces, often features elegant, functional forms like vases, jars, wedding vases, ollas, and bowls. Some incorporate applied decorations (e.g., birds, arrows, or braids), incised/sgraffito designs (etched patterns), or subtle contemporary twists while staying rooted in tradition.
