A very fine weave in Excellent Condition.

Two Grey Hills (often spelled "Two Gray Hills") is one of the most prestigious and technically accomplished regional styles of Navajo rugs (Diné weavings). These rugs are widely regarded as the "Cadillac" of Navajo textiles due to their exceptional quality, fineness of weave, and use of only natural wool colors.
Design: Typically features intricate, complex geometric patterns. A hallmark is a large central diamond (often "hooked" or stepped), surrounded by multiple bordered geometric elements. The overall layout is symmetrical, with elaborate borders framing the field—reflecting a shift in the early 20th century toward rugs meant for floor or wall display rather than just blankets.

History and OriginTwo Grey Hills rugs emerged in the early 1900s in the area around the Two Grey Hills Trading Post and nearby Toadlena Trading Post (on the New Mexico side of the Navajo Nation, east of the Chuska Mountains). Traders like Ed Davies (Two Grey Hills) and George Bloomfield (Toadlena) collaborated with local weavers to refine techniques—encouraging natural wool only, finer spinning, and more intricate designs inspired by earlier patterns (e.g., from J.B. Moore). This elevated the rugs from utilitarian items to collectible art, helping Navajo weaving gain recognition as fine art in American homes. The style has been carried on by generations of weavers, including masters like Clara Sherman, Bessie Manygoats, Cora Curley, and contemporary artists such as Barbara Teller Ornelas and Lynda Teller Pete (who emphasize harmony and tradition in their work).
