Early Navajo chisel and repoussé work dates to the founding generation of Navajo silversmiths, beginning in the late 1860s through the 1880s, before commercial steel stamps became widely available. This period is often called the pre‑stamp era, when decoration was done entirely with files, chisels, and hand‑made gravers, and repoussé relief was adapted from Spanish/Mexican metalworking traditions.

This work displays this classic workmanship although the stone, if #8 dates it to the 1920s.
