Ray Tracey is a renowned Navajo (Diné) jeweler and silversmith, widely recognized as one of the most innovative and respected contemporary Native American artists in the field. Born in 1953 on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, he began making jewelry at age nine and has been a professional since 1977.
He's celebrated for blending traditional Navajo styles with modern, cutting-edge designs. His signature work often features precise stone inlay techniques using vibrant materials like turquoise, lapis lazuli, coral, spiny oyster shell, jet, mother of pearl, and more—set into sterling silver or 14k gold. Motifs draw from Navajo culture, legends, and symbols (e.g., Yeis, eagle feathers, moon gods, sunbursts, knifewings, or bear figures), but he also creates bold contemporary pieces.
