The Vanishing Race (full title often "The Vanishing Race - Navahjo") is one of the most iconic photographs by Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868–1952). It was taken in 1904 and serves as the frontispiece (Plate 1) for his monumental 20-volume work The North American Indian (published starting in 1907), along with accompanying portfolios of photogravures.

The image depicts a line of Navajo (Diné) riders on horseback moving away from the viewer into a shadowy, atmospheric landscape—likely in the Canyon de Chelly area or similar terrain in the American Southwest. The figures are seen mostly from behind, wrapped in blankets, with the scene rendered in soft, sepia-toned tones that create a sense of fading light and mystery. Curtis deliberately composed it to evoke a somber, poetic mood.
