Hand Carved 6 Piece Wood Nativity Set Figures with Great Fine Carved Details
From a Private Colorado Collection
In Very Good Condition
Michael Salazar produced individual santos (e.g., saints, Moses, or devotional figures) in a distinctive, hand-carved style with visible tool marks, natural wood grain, and minimal or earthy painting. His work is collected as New Mexican folk art.
The Salazar family (Leo G. Salazar and his sons, including Leonardo and Michael) are renowned santeros—traditional wood carvers of religious figures (santos or bultos) in northern New Mexico. They work primarily in cedar or cottonwood, creating rustic, expressive folk art pieces with a strong Hispanic Colonial influence rooted in the region's isolated Spanish settler heritage.
