Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) traditional hats are primarily distinctive basket hats (known as líıckaw̉ or li'ickaw' in their language), which are a hallmark of Plateau region Native American cultures, especially among women.
Women primarily wore these hats. They served practical purposes (sun protection) but carried deeper meaning:
  • Worn by women of status or leadership during important events like the ke'uyiit (Root Feast), symbolizing responsibility for sacred foods and the people's covenant with the land.
  • Oral traditions reference them in stories, such as one foretelling the birth of a female child.
