Cleo (Cleo M. Eyre) Teissedre (1930–2020) created handcrafted, hand-painted ceramic/pottery storyteller figurines inspired by Southwest Native American (often Hopi, Navajo, or Pueblo-style) traditions, popular as collectibles in the 1980s–1990s. She started her company around 1981 in Tucson, Arizona, initially for decorative tiles, and expanded into these figurines and sculptures. They represent the cultural tradition of grandparents/elders telling stories to children to preserve history—often featuring an adult figure (male or female, sometimes a kachina/mudhead style) with multiple small children in their lap or around them.
