Northwest Coast round lidded baskets are iconic, highly collectible examples of Indigenous basketry primarily woven by the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) peoples of Vancouver Island and the closely related Makah, Quileute, and Quinault tribes of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. Originating as everyday utilitarian or ceremonial containers, these distinctive round boxes evolved significantly in the late 19th century into exquisite miniature "trinket baskets" finely crafted for the thriving tourist trade.
