Hand Made Small Carved Bird Dish from the Northwest

In Very Good Condition

Northwest Coast bird dishes are carved wooden vessels from Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast—primarily Haida, Tlingit, Tsimshian, and related groups—shaped as or incorporating bird imagery such as Raven, Eagle/Hawk, Owl, or other raptors. These were functional objects used mainly to hold and serve eulachon (oolichan/candlefish) grease or oil—a rich, calorie-dense condiment made from rendered fish oil—during everyday meals and especially at potlatches and feasts. Guests dipped dried fish, meats, roots, or other foods into the oil. Larger feast dishes held substantial quantities for communal serving; smaller personal grease bowls were for individual use.
