Dick Joseph, born in 1952 in Alert Bay, British Columbia, is a respected Kwakwaka'wakw artist and long-time resident of Campbell River. He comes from a family with strong carving traditions—his son Nowell Joseph is also a carver mentored by him and relatives like uncles Patrick Hunt and Bill Henderson. Dick is known for his skilled work in yellow cedar and red cedar, producing large-scale pieces such as totem poles, paddles, plaques, bentwood boxes, and especially masks and ceremonial objects that reflect Kwakwaka'wakw cultural heritage, stories, and spiritual themes.
