Sam Dimmick (also known as Sam Gordon Dimmick or Samuel G. Dimmick) is an Inupiaq (Inuit) artist born in 1960 in Nome, Alaska, with family roots in Shishmaref. He comes from a lineage of ivory, whalebone, and stone carvers and began carving at age 4, learning from uncles Roy and Gordon Dimmick and later mentors like Paul Tiulana and Ken "Ralph" Paneok.
He works primarily in stone (e.g., alabaster, pyrolite, Montana greenstone, serpentine), fossilized bone, ivory, and baleen, creating detailed animal sculptures, especially Alaskan wildlife like bears, whales, orcas, eagles, walruses, and salmon. His pieces are often multi-material and polished to highlight natural forms and textures. They appear in galleries, museums, private collections, and art markets (including Northwest Native festivals).
