The Papago (now commonly called Tohono O'odham) are renowned for their coiled basketry. Tray forms are shallow, open, plate-like baskets used for serving, winnowing, or display. They are typically made with a foundation of bear grass or yucca bundles, Wrapped/coiled with yucca (light color) and devil's claw (dark black/brown) for geometric patterns with Common designs include frets (Greek-key or stepped patterns), whirls, stars, animals (e.g., turtles, spiders), or squash blossoms.
