Papago (Tohono O'odham) lidded split-stitch baskets are traditional coiled basketry creations by the Tohono O'odham people of southern Arizona and northern Mexico. These baskets use a coiled foundation (typically bundled beargrass) wrapped and sewn with yucca or similar fibers. In split stitch (also called open or spaced stitch), the sewing strand splits the previous stitch or allows the foundation coil to show through partially, creating a textured, patterned look where the weave "splits" and the next stitch begins at that point.
