Papago open bowl baskets are traditional, hand-coiled vessels handcrafted by the Tohono O'odham nation (historically referred to as the Papago). Native to the Sonoran Desert region of southern Arizona and northern Mexico, these weavers utilize native desert plants to construct highly durable, functional, and decorative art pieces. They are distinct from neighboring tribal basketry due to their specific choice of stiffer desert materials, thickness, and unique starting knots.
