Papago Polychrome Olla Baskets are traditional coiled basketry creations by the Tohono O’odham (formerly known as Papago) people of the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona and northern Mexico. These are coiled baskets, a hallmark of O’odham/Pima/Papago work. They feature a foundation (often beargrass, cattail stems, or grasses) stitched tightly with splints of willow, yucca, or similar fibers. Devil’s claw (Martynia) provides the distinctive black elements.
