Pima baskets (also known as Akimel O'odham baskets) are renowned traditional coiled baskets made by the Pima people of central and southern Arizona. The Akimel O'odham ("River People"), historically called Pima by outsiders, and their relatives the Tohono O'odham (Papago) are desert-dwelling Indigenous groups famous for their intricate basketry. Baskets were essential for daily life—storing grain, carrying water, serving wine, winnowing seeds, and more. By the late 19th/early 20th century, they became highly sought-after collectibles, leading to increased production for the market. Traditional weaving largely declined by the 1920s–1930s as commercial goods replaced them, though some revival and contemporary work exists.
