Pima (Akimel O’odham) baskets traditionally made with willow and devil’s claw are classic coiled Southwestern Native American basketry from the River Pima people of south-central Arizona (along the Gila and Salt Rivers). eddiebashacollection.com These baskets are tightly coiled, typically using a foundation of split cattail (or sometimes grass/beargrass or a rod foundation in some examples) wrapped with light-colored willow (or occasionally cottonwood) sewing elements for the background and dark devil’s claw (Martynia/Proboscidea, also called martynia or ‘ihug) for the contrasting designs and often the start and rim finish.
