The Pit River Achomawi burden basket (also associated with the closely related Atsugewi people and often labeled as Pit River or Hat Creek basketry) is a traditional conical carrying basket made by Indigenous weavers in northeastern California. The Achomawi (or Achumawi) people, known as the Pit River Indians, live along the Pit River and its tributaries. Women primarily wove these baskets using the twining technique—true weaving with warp and weft elements—rather than coiling.
