The Pit River Tribe (also known as the Achomawi or Achumawi people), a group of eleven autonomous bands of Indigenous peoples from northeastern California. These baskets are part of a rich tradition of twined basketry that has been practiced for centuries, often used for practical purposes like gathering, storage, or as work baskets (e.g., hoppers for processing food). Unlike closed or lidded baskets, open baskets are typically bowl-shaped or conical with an uncovered top, allowing easy access. They are renowned for their tight weaving, geometric designs, and use of natural materials sourced from the Pit River region.
The Pit River Tribe's territory spans along the Pit River (a major tributary of the Sacramento River) near areas like Montgomery Creek, encompassing diverse landscapes from volcanic plateaus to river valleys. Basketry was essential to their way of life, intertwined with salmon fishing, foraging, and environmental stewardship. Today, these baskets are highly valued in the art and antiques market, with examples from the late 19th and early 20th centuries fetching prices from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
