Plains Indian bone hairpipe breastplates are traditional, ornamental chest pieces made from long, tubular hairpipe beads, leather thongs, and fringe, popular from the 1880s onward. Originating as, and replacing earlier, fragile conch shell versions, these breastplates symbolize prosperity, honor, and social status, often worn during ceremonies, dances, and, historically, as, or to signify, warrior prestige.
