The Hohokam were a sophisticated prehistoric Native American culture that thrived in the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona (primarily the Phoenix Basin and Tucson areas) from approximately 300 BCE to 1450 CE. Their name comes from the O'odham (Pima) word meaning "those who have gone" or "all used up," reflecting their vanished civilization.
Hohokam pottery, especially bowls, is one of the most iconic and well-studied aspects of their material culture. These vessels were not only functional but also served as canvases for elaborate decoration, reflecting social status, ritual practices, and artistic innovation.
