Pre-Columbian pottery vases (also spelled precolumbian) are ceramic vessels created by indigenous cultures of the Americas before European contact in 1492. These range from practical storage jars and drinking vessels to highly elaborate ceremonial and funerary pieces. They were typically hand-built or mold-made from terracotta or other local clays, fired in open pits or simple kilns (no true glazes in most traditions), and often decorated with slip painting, modeling, or incising.
