Prehistoric large slate ulu blade artifacts are fascinating examples of ancient Arctic ingenuity, primarily associated with Indigenous peoples of the North American Arctic, including Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland.
The ulu (Inuktitut for "woman's knife") is a distinctive semi-lunar or crescent-shaped knife with a curved blade, traditionally hafted perpendicular to a handle (often made of wood, bone, antler, or ivory). These tools date back thousands of years, with archaeological evidence of slate ulus appearing as early as around 5,000 years ago in some coastal Arctic traditions, becoming prominent in cultures like the Ocean Bay (Alaska), Thule (ancestors of modern Inuit), and related groups.
