The position of "Agent for the Indians of the Cheyenne River Agency in Dakota" (also called the Indian Agent at Cheyenne River Agency) was a federal appointment under the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (part of the Department of the Interior). It involved overseeing administration, treaty obligations, annuities, rations, education, and relations for Sioux bands (primarily Miniconjou, Sans Arc/Two Kettle/Oohenunpa, Blackfeet, and related groups) at the agency. 

The Cheyenne River Agency was established in 1869 along the Missouri River (initially near Fort Sully in present-day South Dakota, later relocated multiple times, eventually to the area of Eagle Butte). It served as a key administrative hub for reservation life following the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie and subsequent agreements.
