The position of "Agent for the Indians of the Rosebud Agency in South Dakota" (also called the Indian Agent or U.S. Indian Agent at Rosebud) was a federal role under the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA, then part of the Department of the Interior). It involved administering the Rosebud Sioux Reservation, overseeing tribal affairs, annuities, law enforcement, education, land issues, and interactions between the U.S. government and the Sicangu Lakota (Rosebud Sioux) people.

The Rosebud Agency originated from earlier agencies (Upper Platte, Whetstone, Spotted Tail) and was formally established/renamed around 1878 when the Spotted Tail band relocated to Rosebud Creek in what became South Dakota. It managed reservation affairs for the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.
