San Ildefonso Pueblo black-on-black pottery by Juanita Wo-peen Gonzales (Maria Martina Martinez, 1904–1988) is among the most iconic and collectible Native American pottery ever made.
Juanita Wo-peen Gonzales was the daughter of renowned potters Maria Martinez and Julian Martinez (the inventors of modern black-on-black pottery in the early 20th century). She was one of Maria’s primary painting collaborators in the 1930s–1950s and later produced her own signed work.
