San Ildefonso Pueblo Black Pottery (also known as black-on-black ware) is one of the most iconic and celebrated forms of Native American pottery, originating from the San Ildefonso Pueblo in northern New Mexico, about 20 miles northwest of Santa Fe.
This distinctive style features a highly polished, glossy jet-black surface with contrasting matte-black designs, creating a stunning visual effect of light and shadow. Common motifs include traditional Tewa symbols like the avanyu (horned water serpent representing flowing water and lightning), feathers, birds, clouds, mountains, and geometric patterns inspired by ancient Pueblo heritage.
