Hand Coiled Black on Blackware with Glossy Finish and Matte Geometric Design

In Good Condition with Chip on Rim and Wear as Pictured

San Ildefonso Black Pottery Vases are iconic examples of Native American ceramic art originating from the San Ildefonso Pueblo, a Tewa-speaking community located in north-central New Mexico along the Rio Grande, near Bandelier National Monument. This style is renowned for its highly polished, matte black-on-black designs, which create subtle contrasts through texture and firing techniques rather than color. These vases often feature elegant, symmetrical forms with motifs inspired by Pueblo traditions, such as geometric patterns, feathers, avanyu (water serpent), or abstract symbols drawn from nature and ceremony. The pottery is hand-coiled from local clay, burnished to a mirror-like sheen using stones, and fired outdoors in dung-fueled pits to achieve the signature black hue through reduction firing, where oxygen is limited to carbonize the surface.
