Maria Martinez (1887–1980) was a world-renowned Tewa artist from the San Ildefonso Pueblo who revitalized the ancient tradition of blackware pottery. She is most famous for her black-on-black technique, where matte designs are painted onto a highly polished black surface. This style was developed alongside her husband, Julian Martinez, in the early 20th century after they were inspired by archaeological fragments found near their pueblo.
