Than Tsideh (also spelled Then Tsideh or similar) is the Tewa name of Erik Fender (born 1970), a contemporary potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo (Po-woh-ge-oweenge) in New Mexico. It means “Sunbird.” He comes from a prominent pottery family: his grandmother was Carmelita Dunlap, his mother is Martha Appleleaf Fender, and he is a descendant/relative of the renowned Maria Martinez (often described as a great-nephew or great-great-nephew in sources). He began learning as a child by watching family members coil and paint traditional black-on-black pottery, apprenticed more formally with his mother in his early 20s, and has won awards at events such as Santa Fe Indian Market and the Eight Northern Pueblos Arts and Crafts Show.
