Sage Vallo is a young San Ildefonso Pueblo community member. San Ildefonso Pueblo is well known for polished black-on-black pottery (pioneered by Maria and Julian Martinez) as well as red and polychrome work. Animal figures, including turtles, are part of the tradition—turtles appear in Pueblo mythology and are made as pottery figures or fetishes by various artists.
