Liana Sanchez is a member of the Sanchez family of potters from San Ildefonso Pueblo (Po-woh-ge-oweenge), New Mexico, known for traditional and innovative Pueblo pottery, especially blackware and polychrome styles.  She appears in family trees as a daughter (or close relative) of Kathy Wan Povi Sanchez (a fourth-generation traditional blackware potter, educator, and activist) and Gilbert Sanchez. Kathy learned from her mother Anita Martinez and great-grandparents Maria and Julian Martinez (legendary figures who revived San Ildefonso black-on-black pottery). The Sanchez/Martinez lineage is central to the pueblo’s pottery tradition.
