Hand Coiled from Redware Clay with Raise Matte Geometric Design Albert (Nephew of Maria Martinez 1927-2009)

Excellent Condition

Albert Vigil (1927–2009) and Josephine Cordova Vigil (1927–2001) were a renowned husband-and-wife pottery team from San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico. Albert, nephew of the legendary Maria Martinez and son of painter Romando Vigil (Tse Ye Mu), specialized in painting designs, while Josephine (originally from Taos Pueblo) hand-coiled and shaped the vessels, often with guidance from Maria and her sister Clara Montoya. They began collaborating in 1945, producing traditional hand-coiled, stone-polished, and open-fired pottery.

Redware jars by the Vigils are typically small to medium storage or decorative jars, with classic Pueblo forms: rounded bodies, narrow necks, and polished surfaces. Common decorations include encircling feather bands or geometric elements painted in matte slips.
