Tomasita Reyes Montoya (1899-1978) was a seminal figure in the "San Juan Revival" of the 1930s, a movement that revitalized traditional pottery at Ohkay Owingeh (formerly San Juan Pueblo).  As one of the original seven potters in this revival, she helped transition the community's nearly vanished craft by studying ancient Potsuwi'i Incised Ware (c. 1450–1500) and adapting those ancestral forms into contemporary polychrome and redware styles.
