Jason Garcia (Tewa name: Okuu Pin, meaning "Turtle Mountain") is a renowned contemporary Native American artist from Santa Clara Pueblo (K'ha P'o Owingeh) in New Mexico. Born in 1973, he is part of a multi-generational lineage of celebrated Tewa potters, including his parents Gloria "Goldenrod" Garcia and John Garcia, his great-grandmother Severa Tafoya, and relatives like Minnie Vigil, Thelma Talachy, Lois Gutierrez, and Tina Garcia. Raised in an artistic environment, Garcia learned traditional pottery techniques from family elders, such as hand-gathering clay, applying native clay slips, and firing in low-temperature outdoor pits. His work bridges ancestral Tewa traditions with modern influences, often incorporating pop culture elements like comic book heroes (e.g., Spider-Man, Thor) to depict Pueblo ceremonies, historical events, and cultural resilience.
