In Very Good Condition

Virginia Garcia (born 1963, also known as Virginia Tafoya Garcia or Virginia Garcia from Santa Clara/San Juan Pueblo) is a contemporary Native American potter from Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico. She comes from a prominent family of Tewa potters.

Her mother is Lydia Tafoya, and her father is Santiago Garcia. She is the granddaughter of Severa Tafoya and Cleto Tafoya, the youngest sister of noted potters Greg Garcia and Tina Garcia, and part of the broader Tafoya family legacy.

Garcia began making pottery seriously around 1987, encouraged by her sister and others. She works in the traditional Santa Clara style: hand-coiled from local natural clay, polished (often to a high sheen), and fired outdoors. She produces both redware and blackware, focusing on classic forms like water jars (ollas), vases, bowls, wedding vases, and bear paw designs—without deep carving in many of her pieces. She prefers traditional, undecorated or simply impressed motifs (such as bear paws) over more elaborate modern variations.
