Joe Baca – Santa Clara Pueblo (b 1940-)

Joe Baca is an award‑winning Santa Clara Pueblo potter known for finely detailed sgraffito designs featuring hummingbirds, butterflies, bear paws, and Avanyu serpents. A student of Marian Naranjo and Angela Baca, he was most active during the 1990s and 2000s and is the artist most commonly associated with the “J. Baca” signature.

Santa Clara Pueblo (Kha’p’oo Owingeh, northern New Mexico) is famous for traditional hand-coiled blackware (and redware) pottery. The deep black color and often glossy finish come from reduction firing (smothering the fire with manure or similar material after polishing). Turtle (or tortoise) effigies/figurines are a popular form—usually small, with a matte body contrasting a polished shell, sometimes with carved or incised shell details, geometric designs, or simple modelin
