Tony Gutierrez Jr. (sometimes referred to as Tony Gutierrez) is a Santa Clara Pueblo potter from a prominent family of Tewa potters. Santa Clara Pueblo (in northern New Mexico) is renowned for its traditional hand-coiled, polished blackware pottery (and redware), often featuring deep carving (sgraffito or incised designs), stone polishing, and pit-firing techniques that produce the characteristic deep black finish. Turtle effigy figures (and other animal or figurative forms) are popular shapes among several Santa Clara artists.
