Mida Tafoya (1931–2024) was a Santa Clara Pueblo potter from the renowned Tafoya/Naranjo family line, known for traditional polished blackware, including carved wedding vases. Background and Family. She was the daughter of Christina Naranjo (sister of the famous Margaret Tafoya) and granddaughter of Sara Fina (Serafina) Tafoya. She grew up surrounded by master potters, learned primarily from her mother, began making pottery around 1945, and later taught her own children. Her work stays firmly in the classic Santa Clara tradition: hand-coiled native clay, stone-polished surfaces, outdoor reduction firing for the deep black finish, and deep carving. Wedding vases are a standard form in her repertoire.
