Wayne "Snowbird" Shields (also signed as Snow Bird or Wayne Snowbird) is a contemporary potter and sculptor from Santa Clara Pueblo (Kha’p’oe Ówîngeh) in New Mexico. He creates figural pottery, including human figures, storytellers, shamans, and other sculptural pieces, typically in the pueblo’s signature black-on-black (or blackware) style.
Santa Clara Pueblo pottery is famous for its highly polished blackware, achieved through traditional hand-coiling, burnishing, and outdoor firing techniques (often smothered with dung to produce the deep black color from carbon deposition). While the pueblo is best known for carved or etched jars, ollas, and vessels (with artists like the Tafoya family as icons), many potters also make figurative work.
