Marie Suazo is an accomplished Santa Clara Pueblo potter. She is the granddaughter of Rosita Velarde and the daughter of Teresa Gutierrez. Her siblings include fellow potters Carol Velarde, Doris Tenorio, Ivan Gutierrez, Earl Gutierrez, and Tony Gutierrez, Jr. adobegallery.com She has been a consistent award winner at the Santa Fe Indian Market since 1990 and is referenced in publications such as Pueblo Indian Pottery: 750 Artist Biographies by Gregory Schaaf. She is noted for deeply carved designs (especially the avanyu/water serpent and geometric patterns), highly polished blackware and redware, and a technique of outlining carved edges with a thin matte black line to enhance visual contrast. She fires both black and red pottery with equal skill using traditional outdoor methods.
