Santa Clara Pueblo (Kha'po Owingeh in Tewa), located along the Rio Grande in northern New Mexico, is renowned for its exquisite hand-coiled pottery tradition dating back centuries. The pueblo's potters are especially famous for their highly polished blackware (and sometimes redware), achieved through a reduction firing process where the fire is smothered to deprive it of oxygen, turning the clay a deep, glossy black.
