Margaret and Luther Gutierrez, a sister and brother from Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, were renowned for their polychrome pottery, a style they learned from their parents, Lela and Van Gutierrez. Their wedding jars, characterized by vibrant, natural pigments in colors like tan, red, green, blue, gold, black, and white, are distinctive for their intricate designs and bold color palettes, unique among Santa Clara potters. These pieces often feature symbolic motifs such as the Avanyu (water serpent), yei figures, or geometric patterns, with some jars showcasing whimsical animal or hunter-like figures, as seen in pieces like a large double-necked wedding vase from the 1970s with Avanyu and yei designs on a putty slip. These wedding vases, rooted in Pueblo tradition, symbolize the union of bride and groom, with two spouts representing their separate lives joined by a bridge.
