Santa Clara Pueblo is located about 26 miles north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. This Tewa-speaking Pueblo has a pottery-making heritage spanning over 300 years, originally for utilitarian purposes like storage, cooking, and water vessels, but evolving in the late 19th century to include pieces made for tourists and collectors. 
Blackware is the most iconic style, achieved by firing polished red clay vessels in a reduced-oxygen (smothered) environment, often using manure or other materials to create the deep black color through a chemical change in the iron content.
